The Ocean Cleanup: Sunglasses Made From Recycled Ocean Plastic

Okay, it’s official, I’m in LOVE…With a pair sunglasses.. But not just any pair…This pair of sunglasses is on a mission: to clean up the oceans, no small feat, that’s for sure. Early last year, I came across an article about the Ocean Clean Up and it piqued my curiosity. It’s a  non-profit organization developing advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic. It is designing very clever technologies to accopmplish this. And so this week, it has launched an amazing new product: a super cool looking par of sunglasses made entirely from recycled pastic. They’re sooo attractive and well thought out. I’m loving everything detail about them.

I know what I’ll be asking Santa for Christmas…

First, it’s worth mentioning that investing in one pair of sunglasses will help fund the continued clean up 24 football fields worth of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Here are some impressive details:

100% of the proceeds from the sales of these sunglasses will go directly to continued cleanup operations. When we return to the patch, because of your support, we estimate that we can clean an area equivalent to 24 football fields of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch from the proceeds of just one pair of sunglasses. If we sell every pair, that means we could clean half a million football fields worth of ocean.

But that’s not all! The design details are super interesting and worth mentioning here:

  • They started by tracking and auditing the plastic the moment it left the ocean. By following a specific process, the plastic in the frames could be traced all the way back to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
  • Through an independent laboratory, they conducted extensive tests to ensure that the material is safe.
  • Then, together with renowned designer Yves Béhar and Safilo, one of the leading companies in the eyewear industry, they worked to create sunglasses that you’ll want to use for the rest of your life (or a very long time).
  • They wanted the look and feel of the sunglasses to be evocative of the ocean – reminding us where they came from and what they are protecting.  ( Job well done. Love that deep blue color!)

Here’s a quick rundown of the design details:

  • The frame is made with plastic collected from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
  • The lenses are polarized with full UV protection.
  • A QR code inside the frames links your sunglasses to you and shows others the impact you have made with your contribution.
  • A special hinge design makes for easy disassembly, so, should you ever need to retire them, they can be recycled by material type.
  • They are reasonably priced…

I mean, need I say more? I think not.
